In the midst of grilling season, we would like to take a few minutes to remind our friends and customers about a few safe-handling tips to use each and every time you cook and prepare food. But first, a little background information.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that approximately 1 in 6 Americans (48 million people) will suffer from food poisoning illness this year, resulting in roughly 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.
As a grocery store chain, we take every precaution to insure our food and groceries are at the absolute highest quality of freshness and safety, but the journey to your kitchen table doesn’t end at our registers.
That’s why Save Mart is proud to announce our participation in the Food Safe Families campaign, a national effort with one goal: Raise awareness of the risks of food poisoning and motivate consumers, particularly parents, to take specific actions to reduce their risk and keep their families healthy.
This is especially important during grilling season, when the ‘kitchen’ is moved out onto the patio and cooking conditions may be irregular. The campaign offers four simple reminders that will help you keep your family safe:
Clean: Clean kitchen surfaces, utensils, and hands with soap and water while preparing food.
Separate: Separate raw meats from vegetables and other ready-to-eat foods by using different cutting boards to avoid cross-contamination.
Cook: Cook foods to the right temperature by using a food thermometer. That’s the only way to know it’s a safe temperature.
Chill: Chill raw and prepared foods promptly if not consuming after cooking.
