Peak Season Picks - Avocados

HOME
Avocados are actually heart-healthy foods, containing good fats that can lower bad cholesterol. They're available year round, but reach their peak in May.

 SELECTING YOUR AVOCADOS:

  • For ripe fruit, choose an avocado that will give to gentle pressure in your palm.
  • Hass avocados have a bumpy skin and will turn nearly black when ripe.
  • Avoid those with broken skin or dark spots.

 STORING YOUR AVOCADOS:

  • For unripe avocados, place in a paper bag with an apple to speed the ripening process. Poke a few holes in the bag and store at room temperature.
  • Ripe avocados can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week.

 SERVING YOUR AVOCADOS:

  • Slice into quarters and separate the sections. Use your fingers to gently remove the pit.
  • Avocados discolor quickly, so rub lemon juice on the surface or cut at the last moment.
