Peak Season Picks - Berries

HOME
If there ever was a “super food,” berries would be it. These tiny treats pack tons of flavor and cancer-fighting phytonutrients into their small but sweet package.

 SELECTING YOUR BERRIES:

  • Berries don’t ripen after picking, so choose berries that are vibrantly colored, taut and shiny. Blackberries and raspberries should be deeply colored; blueberries should have a slight frosty-white hue. Dull or wrinkled skin can be a sign that berries are over the hill.
  • Check the bottom of the package to make sure there isn't leakage from damaged berries that may be hidden.

 STORING YOUR BERRIES:

  • Store berries uncovered in the refrigerator, and don't rinse them until just before you're ready to use them – they spoil quickly when damp.
  • Or place berries in a single layer on a paper towel on a baking sheet. Freeze berries for an hour. Then place frozen berries in a container and keep in the freezer until ready to use.

 SERVING YOUR BERRIES:

  • Rinse thoroughly right before they are used.
